In the meantime, it's all too easy to absorb yourself in personalization and self-expression. This begins with your personality. You can actually choose your look for the first time in the series and not one of the choices are locked to gender. So when a friend visits, your villagers will talk about them rather than her or him -- in fact, villagers will only refer to players with gender-neutral pronouns. All hairstyles and clothes options are readily available to anybody, and you can change hair and your face. Dressing up is improved by a dedicated outfit menu which allows you preview a full outfit instead of switching in and out of clothing until you find something you like. Crafting is, obviously, a significant part of personalization. You can't craft everything--some kinds of furniture can only be purchased from the shop or found blatantly --but you can find entire sets of furniture that may only be crafted, and those are largely the pieces that you can further customize with unique colors and finishes. In the beginning, I crafted all those bits I had but hadn't been able to purchase, like a mirror, but I ended up styling an whole room around furniture I had customized and crafted. It is that extra little flexibility in design which helps inspire creativity and makes every person's house feel unique to them. You can place furniture pretty much everywhere outdoors. I found a sand castle at a tree and set it together my shore; later on I got a beach chair and a beach ball and produced a whole scene on one part of the shore. The resources for both waterscaping and cliff construction are a bit tricky to use and master, since it can be hard to judge where precisely your instrument will hit, but it is a strong creative tool all around. You might even make avenues, plazas, flower beds, and much more--and it's a massive improvement on the equal in previous Animal Crossing games, because paths are easy to place and impossible to eliminate on accident. Animals will stick to some avenues when walking around, you put down, which is just one of the small details that makes them endearing and lively. I frequently stop what I'm doing to see a villager do their thing. Animals will drink stargaze or tea or try to catch bugs, and some of them will wear reading glasses to read books in the home. You can even run in the museum. Every one of these details gives dimension to villagers; I was not sure if I liked Stu, for example, before I stumbled upon him singing an cute song to himself in the center of town.
